NETWORKING AND COORDINATION
This program area focuses on creating an enabling environment for promotion and implementation of disability issues, at national and international levels. The program aims at strengthening the capacity of NUDIPU to provide leadership and be the key network organization at national and regional level in issues of disability.
At national level, it involves:
• NUDIPU continuously working as a networking and coordination organ for the DUs through documenting best practices among DUs (in advocacy, fund raising, partnerships, campaigns, etc), cross visits to other regions, informing DUs about national key activities and involving them in such activities.
• Conducting regular meetings, coordination of advocacy activities, NUDIPU as a resource centre and a documentation centre for lessons learned, best practices, and also very importantly for keeping overall track of advocacy progress in different sectors and different disabilities
• Strengthening NUDIPU’s capacity and focus its resources to spearhead advocacy activities at a higher level – e.g. all matters pertaining legislation, policy analysis, national planning, coordination and linkages with other key national NGOs like NGO forum and DENIVA. This necessitates reviewing the National Advocacy Agenda with other DPOs and tailor it towards aggressive and systematic advocacy to increase the visibility of NUDIPU among other DPOs but also to a wider development community (partners, NGOs, etc)
• Networking and collaboration with district local governments through the District Unions to establish the district structures, build capacity of the DUs through the CBR programme to be able to mainstream disability issues in the district and lower level administrative units. NUDIPU also implements advocacy activities jointly with DUs and also support them in resource mobilization.
• NUDIPU also focuses on increasing her capacity to work in partnerships with other organizations, DPOs, service providers, and GoU institutions. This involves joint activities, contracting special social service providers in government and private sector to carry out elements in projects, etc.
At the regional and international level, NUDIPU attempts to;
• Take advantage of its strength compared to the countries in the region and aim to become a regional powerhouse for disability initiatives in East Africa and the Horn. NUDIPU intend to use part of her services to build the capacity and create stronger relationships with other national DPOs in the region, hosting of major regional conferences on disability in the region, getting involved with lobbying for disability issues in EA Community, EAC Parliament, COMESA etc.
• Aim at spearheading work on the MDGs and disability, build alliances with East African Federation of Disability (EAFOD) and other regional networks to try to either work through these networks or influence them in other directions.
• Spearhead the establishment of regional disability network of all the Umbrella DPOs to share lessons learnt and experiences; and have a common platform to lobby for disability issues including human rights and gender.
